Our vision: information sovereignty for First Nations in Quebec and Labrador
The First Nations in Quebec and Labrador control their information assets. In accordance with their right to self-determination and information sovereignty, they organize, structure, and manage their data in accordance with their values, perspectives, and practices.
Our Objectives
Through this strategy, the First Nations will regain control of their data and information. This will enable them to strengthen their autonomy by ensuring effective management and protection of their information assets.

The Ultimate Goal: A Centre Dedicated to First Nations
Collaborative work is underway to establish a Regional Information Governance Centre (RIGC). This apolitical space will provide priority information management and governance services to First Nations communities and organizations in Quebec and Labrador.
The RIGC’s contribution
- Manage and protect First Nations data, information and knowledge through the provision of support.
- Support existing First Nations structures to build information governance and management capacity.
- Act as a key driver for true autonomy and decision-making based on data that is reliable, culturally and scientifically valid, and representative of First Nations.
- Provide statistical services such as data collection from surveys, population counts, research, and data analysis.
The future RIGC will not replace existing initiatives and structures but will strengthen and enrich them, while respecting each nation’s wishes, realities, priorities and self-determination.
